MANILA, Philippines -
Senator Antonio Trillanes IV won't apologize for his corruption allegations
aimed at Vice President Jejomar Binay and the Home Development Mutual Fund
(Pag-IBIG Fund).
"They won't get an
apology from me," Trillanes said in a phone-patch interview on ANC, days
after claiming that Binay was being investigated for his involvement in
allegedly anomalous transactions in the Pag-IBIG Fund with his favored
contractors.
Binay is the chairman of
the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) while Darlene
Berberabe, the sister in law of his chief of staff, is the Pag-IBIG Fund
president and chief executive officer.
Earlier on Thursday,
lawyer Rico Quicho, Binay's new political spokesman, belied Trillanes'
allegation and demanded that
the senator issue a public apology to the Vice President and
Berberabe.
Trillanes, however,
stood firm on his accusation and urged Binay not to rely on his spokespersons
for his defense.
"Any explanation or
defense coming from spokesmen should not count. The Vice President himself
should face the people," Trillanes said.
The senator said he has
evidence that will pin down Binay on the Pag-IBIG Fund controversy.
"The Vice President
used his position as the head of HUDCC for his own personal interest," he
said.
Trillanes also called on
Berberabe to face the Senate inquiry set later this month.
Berberabe said in an
interview on ANC that Trillanes should correct the "erroneous"
information fed to him and instead base his allegations on facts.
She earlier denied that
Pag-IBIG favors contractors in awarding housing projects since the agency does
not award or deal with contractors.
