THE government will purchase three new heavy landing craft vessels from
Australia to boost the maritime capability of the Philippine Navy, a military
official said.
Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) spokesperson
Restituto Padilla Jr. said the sea vessels will be a big help in the country's
capability to respond to calamities in coastal areas.
Landing ships have the capability to carry heavy
equipment in the coastal areas even without a seaport because these can go near
the shore, the military official said.
Australian Defense Minister Kevin Andrews earlier said
that the Australian Royal Navy will give two decommissioned landing ships to
the Philippine Navy.
Andrews said HMAS Brunei and HMAS Taraca, which were
decommissioned in November 2014, are being refurbished with new safety and
navigation equipment.
He said the vessels are ready for hand over in May
